CA17 - The Puys chain

Self-guided walking tour in Auvergne (France) to discover the extinct Auvergne volcanoes and some lakes, from Volvic to Le Mont Dore via Le Puy de Dôme, Aydat lake, St Nectaire, Pavin lake and Le Puy de Sancy.

For more than 40 km on a north – south stretch, over one hundred volcanos align to form what is known as the Chaîne des Puys. The youngest of these volcanoes is less than 5000 years old. Several hundred meters higher than the hard rock plateau on which they stand, these volcanoes are all different, even in their types of craters. Covered by forest and meadow, they offer vast green spaces. Towards the south, the Monts Dore stand as the remains of a volcano that was active several millions of years ago, which ice and water have eroded, giving way to magnificent deep valleys, waterfalls, lakes and the Puy de Sancy, the highest summit of the Massif Central. From Volvic you will go and discover these volcanos, climb up to the top of the most famous of them: Le Puy de Dôme. You enjoy the quitness of these lakes or spa as St Nectaire before the long ascent via the Lac Pavin, Besse en Chandesse and Super Besse (ski resort) up to Le Puy de Sancy that overlooks Le Mont Dore, another pleasant spa.
